HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
I know it’s only October 5. I know that makes Halloween still 26 days away. Here’s the thing – there are retail establishments with, spoiler alert, CHRISTMAS stuff out already, so I’m thinking I’m almost behind in talking about Halloween! With that as the thought process, here is what’s happening for all things creepy, crawly, ghostly, ghouly, scary and spooky for Halloween in the Delavan area.
Get in the Halloween spirit right away this Saturday, October 7, at Snug Harbor Campground’s Halloween Party. If you choose to go camping this weekend, there is a decorated site contest, so pack appropriately with all your Halloween decor, with the theme being Gilligan’s Island/Tropical Paradise – just don’t then forget to pack your sleeping bag! The event is open to the public, so you can view the decorated sites while you trick or treat (drink?) from 3 – 5 pm, then participate in the pass a dish dinner at the Pub at 5:30 pm, followed by the costume contest with prizes at 6:30 pm.
October 21 offers two options to put on your Halloween finery (okay, easier word – costume!) and run around in it, literally. Miles for SMILES is a unique event that includes a 5K Fun Run/Walk with trick or treat stations and a costume competition. After the Fun Run/Walk there will be live music, Horse Bingo and free apple cider. Enjoy a cross country course, chance to “run with the horses”, crisp autumn weather, and fun with family and friends. The second option is Delavan’s annual Skeleton Scurry 5K/1K Fun Run/Walk held at Lake Lawn Resort. Awards will be given for best dressed, as well as top three placements for runners/walkers. I like the idea of being able to dress in costume and it’s not only okay, but I get possibly get a prize!
Aram Public Library and Delavan Parks & Rec pairs up for Spook-tacular on October 27 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. Head on down to Phoenix Park for spooky, family-friendly festivities that include music, games, mini-pumpkin decorating, and the best part, oodles of candy! Don’t forget to wear your Halloween costume! If the weather isn’t the greatest, then the fun will move indoors to the Library.
You never know what you might find in the woods… Come if you dare to the Haunted Trail at Wildwood Park in Darien, hosted by the Darien EMS. From 4 – 6 pm, the Haunted Trail is child-friendly (not as spooky and scary), but then from 7 – 9 pm it’s teen/adult-oriented, so “friendly” probably isn’t a word being used so much anymore. Mmmwwwaaaaahhhaaahhaaahhaaahhaaa! Or maybe I should just say BOO!
This next part is what I look forward to – the actual trick or treating! I love seeing all the kids in costume, running around the neighborhood, having fun with friends on a beautiful fall day. It’s one of my favorite times of the year, and one added bonus is it’s candy corn time! Yes, I’m one of those that likes candy corn – the original flavored, orange/yellow/white kind, not the fancy flavored and different colored kind. I’m a candy corn purist! (I just made that up…!)
Now for the details of trick or treating :
October 29: 1 – 3 pm, Delavan Township, followed by their Halloween Party at Community Park, 3 – 5 pm, with hayrides, games, a magician, face painting, costume contest, snacks, (more) candy and tons of fun.
- October 31: 9 am – 8 pm, Aram Public Library, visit the Children’s Desk in costume to collect a treat
- October 31: 4 – 6 pm, Delavan, following by the Goblin Walk at 6:30 pm from the Post Office to the Spook House at the American Legion that is 7 – 9 pm.
- October 31: 4 – 6 pm, Darien
No matter how you choose to celebrate Halloween, make sure it includes lots of candy corn! Okay, that’s how I like best to celebrate it, but I suggest you instead get in the Halloween spirit with any and all of the fun things above! Happy Halloween, all month long!
